Scholarships & Financial Aid

For more information regarding the scholarships listed here, contact the Department of Political Science.  Amounts and precise requirements may vary. Visit the Office of Scholarships or the Office of Financial Aid to learn about additional financial support.

Unless otherwise indicated, all candidates for a scholarship must be majoring in the Political Science department and must be enrolled as full-time students at the time of the award. Please note that only the Pre-Law, LWV, and Anders scholarships require submission of a completed application form. All others are awarded without an application process, after an annual review of the academic records of current POLS majors.

John Breaux Scholarship (1 award per year)

Value: typically $1,500 to $2,500

Criteria:
1. Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
2. Freshman status required.
3. Louisiana residency required.
4. U.S. citizenship required.
​5. Minimum ACT score of 23.

William Albert Martin Scholarship (2 awards per year)

Value: typically $1,500 to $2,500
Criteria:
1. Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
2. Freshman status required.
3. Louisiana residency required.
4. U.S. citizenship required.
5. Preference for graduates of Gueydan High School or another high school in Vermilion Parish.

Colonel Thomas Ritchie Scholarship (1 award per year)

Value: typically $500 to $800
Criteria:
1. Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
2. Sophomore status required.
3. Louisiana residency required.
4. U.S. citizenship required.
5. Diploma from a Louisiana high school required.

James D. & Fatmi Anders Scholarship (1 award per year)

Value: typically $1,000 to $1,500
Criteria:
1. Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
2. Preference for sophomore, junior, or senior status.
3. Preference for students with interest in governmental service or the intelligence field.
4. Calls for applications go out to student e-mail addresses each Spring semester.

Police Jury Scholarship

Value: typically $1,000
Criteria:
1. Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
2. Junior status required.
3. Diploma from a Louisiana high school required.

John & Mary Durand Scholarship (4 awards per year)

Value: typically $400 to $600
Criteria:
1. Minimum 3.25 G.P.A.
2. Minimum of 45 credit hours.

William McGregor Castellini Scholarship (1 award per year)

Value: typically $500 to $800
Criteria:
1. Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
2. Junior or senior status required.

League of Women Voters / Thetis Cusimano Scholarship (1 award per year)

Value: typically $1,000 to $1,500
Criteria:
1. Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
2. Preference for junior or senior status.
3. Preference for students participating in an internship related to civic engagement and education or an internship with a local government entity.
4. Calls for applications go out to student e-mail addresses each Spring semester.

Edwin D. Mouton Scholarship (1 award per year)

Value: typically $400 to $600
Criteria:
1. Minimum 2.5 G.P.A.
2. Junior or senior status required.
3. Louisiana residency required.
4. U.S. citizenship required.
5. Diploma from a Louisiana high school required.

Ory G. Poret Scholarship (4 awards per year)

Value: typically $400 to $600
Criteria:
1. Minimum 2.75 G.P.A.
2. Junior or senior status required.
3. U.S. citizenship required.

Tom & Lena Ritchie (Pre-Law) Scholarship

Value: typically $2,000 to $3,000
Criteria:
1. Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
2. Graduating seniors only.
3. Louisiana residency required.
4. U.S. citizenship required.
5. Intention to take the LSAT required.
6. Intention to enter law school after graduation required.
7. Any and all majors outside Political Science are eligible.
